“The process is the message”: democracy, local governance and OccupyLSX - article by Alex Shankland
Date: 12/20/2011
Description
The global “Occupy” movement came to the City of London in October, with the creation of an encampment beside Saint Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of the traditional financial district. The “Occupy London Stock Exchange” or “OccupyLSX” encampment has attracted interest because of its links with the global movement and its emphasis on systemic political and economic issues at the global and national levels. However, some of the most powerful lessons from OccupyLSX actually concern democracy and governance at the very local level. This applies in two domains: the occupation’s focus on modelling an innovative local democratic process in the way it manages its own decision-making; and the issues of democratic accountability that it has raised in relation to the Church of England and the City of London, within whose territories it has been established.
