Strengthening Participatory Local Governance: Lessons from abroad

In this essay John Gaventa reviews the emergence of new forms of participatory governance in other countries, points to some innovative strategies and legal frameworks for strengthening citizen engagement, and suggests some lessons that can perhaps be applied to the growing field of deliberative and participatory governance in the United States, as well as other countries.

Portions of this essay, published in the National Civic Review Winter 2004 edition, are adopted from a working paper prepared by John Gaventa for the Neighborhood Renewal Unit of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in the United Kingdom, on “Representation, Community Leadership, and Participation: Citizen Renewal in Neighborhood Renewal and Local Governance.”
