Outcome of the Pre Election Voters Awareness Campaign in India

As previously announced, PRIA and Partners undertook Pre Election Voters Awareness Campaign (PEVAC) in 5 states of the country where Panchayat elections were held recently.

In each state multi level platforms of 300 to 500 civil society organizations undertook this campaign to make citizens aware about the importance of their participation (as voters and as candidates) in local elections. Using folk arts, posters, pamphlets, print and electronic media, and linkages with governments, this campaign covered almost 30 million electorates in 5 northern states.

PEVAC was very effective in the sense that polling percentages in intervened areas were almost 80 percent or more. Very significant proportions of marginalized sections of society (women and lower castes) contested and won elections in local governments.
