LogoLink Southeast Asia and
One World Action co-organised a workshop on "Democratization, Good
Governance, Local Governance and People's Participation" on 9 September,
2004, at the Asia-Europe People's Forum in Hanoi, Vietnam.
This forum brought together around 500 activists from
across Europe and Asia who are working together to make the Asia Europe
Meeting (ASEM) process more accountable, transparent and open to Civil
Society. Local democratisation struggles were one of the focal points
of interest and discussion within the forum.
Speakers at the workshop included Marilyn Taylor of
the University of the West of England, UK, Nguyen Thi Hoang Van of the
Vietnam Youth Federation, and LogoLink partner Djuni Thamrin of the Indonesian
Partnerships for Local Governance Initiatives (IPIG). Commentators included
Hilary Wainwright, editor of Red Pepper magazine, and Thawilwadee Bureekul,
a researcher at the King Prajadhipok's Institute in Thailand.
