The LogoLink Coordination Unit
helped to facilitate a Ford Foundation China sponsored workshop on "Tools
and Methodologies for Participatory Urban Governance". The workshop
was held in Wuhan City, Hubei province, China. It gathered 29 participants
from the local government, NGOs, community organizations, and academic
institutions from eight cities throughout China: Nanning (Guang Xi); Qing
Dao; Hunan; Wuhan; Huang Shi; Shanghai; Beijing and Nanjing. There were
at least 2-3 participants from each urban community.
The workshop aimed to provide
a practical appreciation of tools and methodologies that may be applied
to ensure citizen voice and participation in various urban community construction
initiatives. It was intended to be a space for participants to critically
reflect on their experiences of drawing into and mobilizing citizen participation.
They were exposed to a range
of practical tools and methodologies for strengthening citizen participation
that have been used in Southwest China and other countries, and were encouraged
to consider the practical application of these tools and methodologies
and to critically analyse their own efforts at engendering participatory
approaches to community construction initiatives.
The workshop was conducted
and facilitated by a team of two persons from the LogoLink programme,
and locally-hired consultants from Kunming and Shanghai. The workshop
participants also visited a community in Wuhan to interact with different
stakeholders on participatory governance initiatives in the community.
