Innovations in Government Awards Programmes

The Ford Foundation supports six Innovations in Government awards programmes to spark and encourage innovation in government worldwide, with programmes in Brazil, Chile, the Philippines, South Africa and the United States:

The Impumelelo Innovations Award Programme in South Africa is dedicated to rewarding innovations in government and public-private partnerships that reduce poverty and address key developmental issues of national concern (South Africa - English).

The Galing Pook Awards in The Philippines is an award-giving programme to promote innovation and excellence in local governance by recognising best local government practices. (Philippines - English)

The Public Management and Citizenship Program in Brazil is a programme that rewards and promotes innovations in governance by public and indigenous organisations at the local and national levels (Brazil - Portuguese)

The Citizenship and Local Management Program in Chile is a programme for strengthening citizenship and recognising the role of citizen organisations in public space (Chile - Spanish).

The Innovations in American Government Program was founded in 1985, and seeks to identify and promote excellence and creativity in the public sector through its annual awards competition.

Honoring Contributions in the Governance of American Indian Nations is an awards programme that identifies, celebrates and shares outstanding examples of tribal governance among American Indian nations (USA - English).

Institute for Government Innovation. Founded in 2001 with Ford Foundation support, the Institute for Government Innovation houses and funds the Innovations in American Government Program and serves as the hub for a global network of individuals dedicated to excellence in government (USA - English).

UN programme offering assistance and capacity building in governance and management development. Shares country-based experiences and best practices in areas such as decentralised governance, public sector management and accountability.

Institute on Governance
Canadian non-profit research organisation dedicated to promoting effective governance, with emphasis on the traditions, institutions and processes that determine how power is exercised, how citizens are given a voice, and how decisions are made on issues of concern.

Centre for the Future State
Development Research Centre at IDS pursuing high-quality research, innovation and practical understanding of issues relating to the future of public authority in developing countries.

Civil Society and Governance programme
Shares findings from a recent research programme supported by the Ford Foundation, to examine the interplay between civil society and governments in 22 countries in six regions.
